From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In botany, a leaf is an above-ground plant organ specialized for photosynthesis. For this purpose, a leaf is typically flat (laminar) and thin. As an evolutionary trait, the flatness of leaves works to expose the chloroplasts to more light and to increase the absorption of carbon dioxide at the expense of water loss. In the Devonian period, when carbon dioxide concentration was at several times its present value, plants did not have leaves or flat stems. Many bryophytes have flat, photosynthetic organs, but these are not true leaves. Neither are the microphylls of lycophytes. The leaves of ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms are variously referred to as macrophyll, megaphylls, or euphylls. Leaves are also the sites in most plants where transpiration and guttation take place. Leaves can store food and water, and are modified in some plants for other purposes. The comparable structures of ferns are correctly referred to as fronds. Furthermore, leaves are prominent in the human diet as leaf vegetables. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by haans42 - Thu Mar 12 11:42:38 2009 Any tomato growers ever have suckers growing on leaf surface? Q. I have a grape tomato plant with suckers growing right in the middle of the stem of the leaf. It's a fully formed sucker, not a section of the leaf. I've been told it might be due to pruning. But I didn't do that much pruning, and I've pruned other plants and have never seen this. So, picture main stem with leaves growing normally. Then picture the stem of the leaf. On the stem of the leaf is where the suckers are growing from. Asked by chicagocheryl2008 - Sat Jul 19 08:19:10 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Though not actually common this does happen. i've had these shoots growing from the trusses also. they are not a problem if you pinch them out as soon as they appear. Q. i have a jade plant and have heard that you can grow another with the leaf. But first i need to callus it. How do i do that? Cut a leaf off at its base with a sharp knife and the callus part is leaving it to dry out for a couple of days ( a callus forms over the cut) before planting it in soil,or it'll tend to rot...done it a few times and they root easily..
