Why do most lamps have the holders for screw in bulbs and not bayonet?
Q. We bought an up-lighter and assumed it took bayonet bulbs. Found out it's screw in bulbs so had to go back in town for a bulb. Why do they use different types? Most main light fitting are bayonet and people have spare bulbs in for them. You have to buy separate types of bulbs for lamps.

A. I have wondered the same myself. I have come to the conclusion that it is a a 'fashion' thing, where fancy bulbs come in edison screw to assist in the perception that they are special and therefore the consumer can be charged more for them.

How do I convert table lamps purchased in USA for permanent use in Ireland?
Q. I am giving my granddaughter some fancy table lamps for for her new bedroom this Christmas. Can these be modified so she can use them in Ireland (she lives in Ireland)? How?

A. Voltage in the USA is 120 volts Voltage in Ireland is 230 volts Lamps - Holders - Cable Wiring - Wall plug would really all need to be changed by a qualified electrician, Chance of Death or a Fire as Irelands Electric Voltage is twice that of USA

Can I put higher watt lamps in my low voltage bathroom lighting?
Q. I had six low voltage spot lights installed in my bathroom ceiling. The transformer sits in the loft. Each spot has a 20 watt bulb. I'd like it brighter. I saw 35w and 50 w lamps available, but would it be safe to install these?

A. NO and no again it is rated for a certain wattage because that is the highest wattage that is SAFE. You of course could put a higher wattage bulb in BUT then it will cause the transformer to either overheat or burn out. Overheated transformers CAN (not always but often enough) and DO cause fires that burn down houses. What you might look into is getting a higher rated transformer, then you might be able to increase the wattage. However make sure the light sockets are also rated to take a higher wattage bulb.
