Food Related Tips?
Q. I do have a little weight that I would just love to get rid of, but all the food here at my houe is so tempting. I can be very picky, but i'll have to eat other things if I want to lose some weight. Could you all please give me some tips on what healthy things I should eat, is it ok to drink soda everyone once and awhile, and some tips to avoid tempting food such as chips, fried food, etc. Thanks!

A. Well its best to avoid processed foods. A few years ago before I turned hypoglycemic... At 5' I weighed 126lbs, and not drinking sodas literally made me lose 5lbs in a week. The salt in them can bloat you up. Also, the artificial sweeteners actually get stored in your body... not good. Chips and things are fine. Its which KIND you are eating. The kettle chips lightly salted are my absolute favorite. Its just potatoes, oils, and sea salt. Plus, they have 450mg of potassium and only 100mg of sodium. Its my belief after once weighing 126lbs and dropping to 102lbs... that its really the amount of refined sugars and chemicals you are eating. Produce make great snacks! Like the baby carrots that have 300mg of potassium or more are… [cont.]

Why do teeth become sensitive?
Q. I had never had sensitive teeth. About a month ago, I started having sensitive teeth. It's one tooth at a time, but different teeth. It does not happen related to food, drinks or temperature. I'm not whitening my teeth either. What could be the cause of this?

A. Are you using plain toothpaste? If not try plain Crest or Colgate as some formulas have tartar control or whitening components that will cause some people sensitivity. If you are brushing 2 -3 times daily for 2 minutes and flossing daily you should be removing the ongoing plaque buildup pretty thouroughly. If you don't have plaque staying on the teeth then it isn't present to turn into hard tartar (which you can no longer brush and floss off) Also, use only a soft toothbrush or you risk brushing away the gum tissues and that will expose the root of the tooth causing sensitivity. My recommendation would be to try a sensitive (or Plain) tooth paste exclusively for a month and see how you feel! Good luck - JAMRDH - a dental hygienist

Digestive thoughts?
Q. Why is it that when you eat sweetcorn, the next day when you empty your bowels, the unchewed corns remain undigested? Also, when you eat a bowl of Sugar Puffs, why when you need the loo a few hours later does your urine smell of Honey? Do you have any food or drink related digestive queries to add?

A. The outer skin is not digested by the enzymes in the small intestine, therefore whatever is inside the skin passes through undigested. As for the sugar puffs...I'll have to look into the composition of those. Don't think we have them in Australia.
