Can 220 volt electric flourescent light fixtures be wired for residential panel at 110 volts?
Q. I got some flourescent light fixtures for free and they are for a hospital that is wired for higher voltage for the lighting than 110v. The voltage on the box says 277 volt, but I think this is that they are rated up to 277, but made for 220 volts wiring. Do hospitals use 220v for their lighting? Is there a way to find out more about these light fixtures to be sure I wire them correctly? I want to wire them to use as indoor lighting for a house, and will wire in a 220 breaker, but need to know if i am right about the lights and the voltage rating for the wiring. Any advice is helpful and if you are an electrician, leave me an email or a website to learn more or to ask more questions. The light fixtures are brand new and never… [cont.]

A. What you would need to do is replace the original ballast in each one with a 120 volt ballast that has the same wattage rating as the lamps. Look up the manufacturer's site for a ballast and see what they have in 120 volts. I am guessing if the fixtures are really good ones it will pay to try a mod of one to see if that will be economical and practical. If they were just cheap fixtures the ballast cost might be worse than just dumping those and buying new 120V ones. The alternative is to sell those 277 volt ones on eBay and use the money for new 120V ones.

i plan too hook up 4 light fixtures and 3 wall outlets on a 15 amp breaker. is this too much power?
Q. i plan too use 4 24 watt energy effecient bulbs in the light fixtures, and a tv, dvd and stereo. well considering the house i just bought is an old house, almost half of the house is run on a single 15 amp breaker. I am trying to fix the problem one room at a time. Now i am running into the problem of almost maxes out at 200 amps at the box.

A. House wiring is a permanent thing and should be kept at a quality level, not just for present use but also for people using it in the future. They should be able to use it with confidence that safe and reliable standards have been met. ( pretty cool speech ) I would recommend 15 Amp with 14AWG for lights and 20 Amp with 12 AWG for outlets and I would not recommend cheapy outlets.

Can you put compact flourecent light bulbs in light fixtures?
Q. I noticed on the bulb it says "WARNING: do not use in enclosed recessed light fixtures." i guess im not exactly sure what an "enclosed recessed fixture" is (im guessing an enclosed fixture that goes back into the ceiling?) is it safe to put it in one of those hallway glass dome-looking light fixtures?

A. The worst that will happen when a CFL is placed in a entirely enclosed fixture is that its lifespan will decrease. This is due to more rapid aging from the heat trapped by the glass dome. For indoor fixtures, enclosed simply refers to a fixture not generally being open to ventilation. If you can touch the bulb without having to remove pieces of the fixture, you can consider it a non-enclosed fixture. CFLs will produce less heat than an equivalently-bright incandescent light, making heat production less of an issue. The problem isn't with the fixture, it is with the electronics in the CFL itself.
