A bead is a small, decorative object that is usually pierced for threading or stringing. Beads range in size from under 1 millimetre (0.039 in) to over 1 centimetre (0.39 in) in diameter.

A pair of beads made from Nassarius sea snail shells, approximately 100,000 years old, are thought to be the earliest known examples of jewellery.

Beadwork is the art or craft of making things with beads. Beads can be woven together with specialized thread, strung onto thread or soft, flexible wire, or adhered to a surface (e.g. fabric, clay).

Types of beads

Cloisonné beads

Beads may be divided into several types of overlapping categories, based on different criteria such as component materials, manufacturing process, place or period of origin, surface patterning, or general shape. In some cases, such as millefiori and cloisonné beads, multiple categories may overlap in an inseparably interdependent fashion.

Components

Beads can be made of many types of materials. The earliest beads were made of convenient natural materials; when found, these could be readily drilled and shaped. As human technology became capable of obtaining or working with more difficult natural materials, those were added to the range of available substances. The same was true of new synthetic materials when created.

In modern manufacturing, the most common bead materials are plastic, glass, metal, and stone.

Does anyone know of a site for swapping beads and beading supplies?
Q. I just started playing with beads last year, making necklaces and earrings, and I already have a lot of beads that I'm not sure I'll ever use. Are there any sites for trading these beads, maybe something grab-bag style? It seems like it would be a good idea. I belong to a paperback book swap and I've saved a ton of money doing that, maybe swapping beads would be good too. Any suggestions?

A. Click on Groups, in your Yahoo Home Page. Type in Beading. If it's anything like Artist Trading Cards, you'll have about a gazillion groups to choose from. You can look at their splash pages without joining, (and joining is free anyway), and pick out groups that look like doing the things you like. I've found Groups to be a pretty good resource for trading.

How many beads should I buy for my wife on a pandora bracelet to start?
Q. I want to buy her a Pandora Bracelet for V day, but they are very pricey based on how many beads you put on it? I want to get her quite a few to start so it won't look stupid without alot of charms. How many charms/spacers, etc, is a good place to start?

A. You don't have to start with alot of beads. She will probably want to pick out a few herself so maybe get around 3 to start, like a birthstone bead, a glass bead in her favorite color and of course a heart, as well as giving her the booklet that shows all the beads so she can have some fun with it herself. It is a VERY thoughtful gift!
