In economic theory, an auction may refer to any mechanism or set of trading rules for exchange. There are several variations on the basic auction form, including time limits, minimum or maximum limits on bid prices, and special rules for determining the winning bidder(s) and sale price(s). Participants in an auction may or may not know the identities or actions of other participants. Depending on the auction, bidders may participate in person or remotely through a variety of means, including telephone and the internet. E-mail helps a lot, too. Maybe instead of a Silent Auction, consider a Chinese (aka Teacup) Auction. That's where people buy tickets for $1/each (6/$5) and can put their tickets in various canisters and win those prizes. For those, I do get some donations but also buy some items. For example, I usually buy a new men's 10-speed bike at Toys R Us for about $70 and that usually gets 300 tickets.
