How in latin do you work around the comma?
Q. I know Latin doesn't have commas, but how would you separate where the comma would normally be. Like if I said; but why then am I still here, and why am I still strong. If certain types of words have to go in order, would I have to write "WHY" twice, like usual, or would I just use one and put it where its suppose to go?
Asked by Quinton - Wed Jun 23 11:04:48 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are right that the Romans did not use commas. They also did not use periods, spaces between words or capital and lower case letters. I know it is not historically accurate, but I see nothing wrong with using modern punctuation.

Whats the difference between the latin words Ultio and Ultionis?
Q. The words mean Revenge, Avenging, and Retribution in Latin , but I do not know what the suffix 'nis' does to the word. I've tried looking up Latin suffixes and found a ton but 'nis' wasn't one of them.

A. Some Latin words increase in the genitive ( the possessive) case. A dictionary will always give the nominative, followed by the genitive. From the genitive, you can determine which declension the noun belongs to, as each declension has a unique genitive form. If you are messing around with latin, you might find it useful to look at the Latinum Podcast (google it) which is a huge free resource, or this:

What is the most difficult Latin text in terms of complicated grammar?
Q. I am wondering which Latin text, preferably classical, is the most complicated for the modern reader. I have studied Latin a bit at university and I thought that perhaps one of Cicero's, but any further information would be appreciated.
Asked by Richard - Wed May 26 07:15:49 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I believe that virtually any professional Latinist would say that the most challenging text is Vergil's "Aeneid." However, for prose, I would recommend two texts that are particularly challenging but achievable with hard work and perseverance. The two are Tacitus's "Agricola" and Cicero's "Tusculan Disputations." If you have more specific questions about them, send me a yahoo answers email.

How do Latin Gerundives work without a object?
Q. Like if you say 'sibi laborandum est' without an object that he/she must do to? My latin teacher said that it isn't something we should think about or understand now until we learn Latin at A level or beyond. Why do Latin Gerundives without an object work? And is the gerundive always in the same form for it?
Asked by The Oxymoron Is The Key. - Tue Oct 20 11:17:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It seems to me that you mean the subject, not the object. Although the action of the gerundive is to be performed on the subject, it's a passive construction, so that the recipient of the action IS the subject. A famous Latin statement using this construction is "Carthago delenda est"--"Carthage must (is to be) destroyed," which Cato the Censor said at the end of every speech he made in the Senate until finally it penetrated or the Senate got tired of hearing him say it, and Rome destroyed Carthage. The dative word in such a construction is known as the "dative of agent" and refers to the person who must do the action. Such a sentence COULD be translated with the dative as the subject and the real subject as the object, which would… [cont.]

How long will it take to become a competitive latin dancer?
Q. I am 21 (soon to be 22) and I am going to start ballroom dancing very soon. I want to compete in latin dance but I am just wondering how long it will take before I will be ready to compete. I know everybody is different but if I take private lessons 3 or 4 times a week how long do you think it would take? I would love to go to the Dancesport latin dance competitions. Thanks.
Asked by Kaleigh - Sun Jul 27 22:06:49 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you have no prior dance experience and you are not some sort of extremely gifted dance prodigy, it will take you about three years taking lessons three times a week AND practise for one hour a day. Don't take more than three lessons. Its better to practice more often than take more lessons. Usually, your studio will have floor time available for you to practice but often your local gym will have some hardwood floor that you can practice on. I prefer this because you get used to dancing in front of strangers. I'd also like to give a shameless plug for my blog called the "Ballroomblog" at Its a great resource for beginning dancers. See you there! ballroomblog

What are the best Latin American countries to live in for a gringo North American?
Q. I'm a 28 year old guy and I want to move to Latin America to perfect my Spanish and live a more laid back lifestyle. I'm deciding between Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Chile. Which one would be the best in your opinion (or any other ones that I did not mention)? I'm leaning towards Panama, but I know the least about it. If you have any significant personal experience in Latin America (especially Panama) please share with me your thoughts. Thanks!

A. Since you're a guy, I would choose Argentina if you like the artistic and nightlife lifestyle, and its a little dangerous in Buenos Aires for women but if you're up to it, it's a really beautiful place. If not, I would go for BRASIL!!! You wouldn't be able to perfect your spanish because they speak Portuguese, but if you are looking for the beautiful laid back lifestyle, Brasil is the place to go! they are loving and will accept anyone, they love meeting new people and are extremely genuinely friendly unlike many americans, they actually WANT to get to know you and want to have a good time! have a great time! bye!

What is a good Latin phrase signifying unity, selflessness, or doing for common good?
Q. I'm looking for a phrase that doesn't necessarily make this sound noble. A phrase that conveys not living to satisfy yourself but for others. I'm not sure if such a saying exists, especially in Latin, but I'm trying. And it really does have to be in Latin...I have my reasons =) Thanks so much, kind of an obscure question, sorry!

He saw seas, marshes, mountains, mountain ranges, large planes, and walls and crack in the crust. Look below for a list of my favorite lunar sites but their Latin names. Q. I am going for my first introductory latin ballroom dance lesson. Its private and only 30 min. I know you usually wear strappy thick healed shoes but I don't have any right now. So for this first lesson what shoes should I wear?

A. You want something that is comfortable and will have a non slip heel. Composite soles will make your turns harder, but not impossible for a first lesson. If you are considering taking up dancing as a hobby or career then you should consider gettting Latin Dance Shoes. Your instructor should be able to help you with selection and how to make sure the shoes fit.

This should help you out Latin American Independence (1807-1824), political and military movement that ended colonial rule by Spain and Portugal over Mexico, Central America, and South America and gave birth to the modern independent nations of Latin America. When the independence movement began at the beginning of the 19th century, Latin America contained two large and productive colonial empires, the Spanish and the Portuguese. Spain s colonies stretched from what is now the western United States and Mexico to Argentina, while Portugal s empire was in Brazil. Under the system of colonialism, these territories were subject to extensive and complex networks of control by Spain and Portugal. … [cont.]
